Whenever we've tried to figure out how to make changes for ourselves the most reliable way was almost always to find someone who had already done it.
When we wanted to start investing, we looked for experienced mentors.

Over time we realized that building our network was one of the most important things we have ever done.
And there was no magic to it, we just developed relationships with people over time.
The secret to a wealthier, healthier, happier life is: having a mentor or access to a group of people who are successfully doing exactly what you want to do.
It become like a cheat code we used for ourselves.
One of the very first mentors we got to meet with regularly was Rob Minton.
He was working with investors in Ohio through his real estate brokerage and we found his business model fascinating!
We negotiated a deal (aka, we paid him a chunk of money!) to have the opportunity to drive down to his office and check out what he was doing in person.
We are forever grateful. That money was a lot for us back then but it's been returned to us in multiples.
All good mentors have that effect we've found.
But we never would have met Rob if we’d tried to invest in real estate or grow our business alone.
Instead, we looked for any opportunity we could to surround ourselves with people who were doing what we wanted to do.
And at that time, it meant travelling to the States to have the opportunity to hang around with and meet people like Rob.
Going out of our comfort-zones and networking with complete strangers changed the course of our lives and did more for us than we ever could have accomplished alone.
You see, we didn't have anyone around us buying properties for the long-term, working with investors, or anyone doing Rent-to-owns... all things we were trying to do.
In fact, most people repeatedly told us we couldn’t do it, we were trying to do the impossible.
We invested thousands of dollars we didn’t really have to attend events simply to meet new people and try and learn something we can take back and use.
We remember thinking,
"What if we don't learn anything"
"What if this is all stuff we already know"
All that was going through our heads.
We quickly realized we made the right choice.
In fact, by the end of the event, it turned out to be one of the best decisions we’d ever made.
Because at that event, we’d overheard Rob Minton talk about how he was already very successfully doing EXACTLY what we were trying to do outside Cleveland, Ohio.
We introduced ourselves and that transformed into a powerful mentorship that we’re so grateful for today.
And all of that came from us taking a risk and going out of our way to surround ourselves with the right people.
Point being...
There's a LOT of power in being in the right room with the right people.
One quote from the late, great Jim Rohn has always stood out to us.
It is "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with".
It was like when our parents told us "you are who your friends are."
Of course when we were younger we didn't think they knew what they were talking about.
But they were right!
